How Erections Work

Erections involve coordinated signals among the brain, nerves, hormones and blood vessels.

Sexual stimulation can trigger nerve signals that relax smooth muscle and allow increased blood flow into erectile tissue. Blood is retained long enough to create rigidity. Problems anywhere along this pathway—including vascular, neurological, hormonal, medication-related or psychological factors—can affect erectile function.

Persistent erectile difficulties deserve medical evaluation because they can sometimes be associated with an underlying health issue.
