Sexual-Enhancement Supplements: Evidence & Safety

This category requires more skepticism than a typical wellness purchase.

What U.S. health agencies say

NCCIH says no complementary health approaches have been shown to be safe and effective for sexual enhancement or treating erectile dysfunction, and research on individual herbs is generally limited. FDA also maintains a notification database for sexual-enhancement products found with undeclared drug ingredients.

Important distinction: A category-level FDA warning is not proof that a specific unlisted product is contaminated. FDA also cautions that absence from its notification list does not establish safety.

Safer decision-making

Discuss supplements with a health professional, especially when you take medicines or have chronic conditions. Seek medical evaluation for persistent erectile difficulties rather than relying on a supplement to diagnose or treat the cause.
